This paper holds that in the current world, with the intercultural communication is getting momentum nowadays in the twenty first century, and that there is a ramping trend of fusion between Confucianism and Christianity, East and West, old and new etc. it is necessary to gain a good understanding of Confucianism and Christianity, which underlie the eastern and western cultures in a profound way, and moreover to learn their specific statements concerning personal cultivation in particular, so that we can better understand why people from the East and the West sometimes act, think and live differently, given the interactions among different cultures are getting more and more and that intercultural communication is encountered almost everywhere in today's world. In particular, people's personal cultivation plays an important role in the social harmony and world peace. Therefore, the paper begins with the basic introduction of the two overwhelmingly influential thoughts, the background, history, actuality etc. of Confucianism and Christianity. Then the paper further explores, in detail, the related scriptures of personal cultivation from four different aspects concerning personal cultivation, namely, the connotations analysis of Confucius' Way and Jesus' Words, which the paper examines from linguistic and philosophical and theological approaches; secondly the paper discusses the key concepts in—humaneness and love, which lay the basic foundation in both Confucianism and Christianity for personal cultivation; thirdly, the paper analyses different attitudes of Confucianism and Christianity towards personal cultivation and interpersonal relationships and finally this paper discusses ideas and principles in Confucianism and Christianity concerning one's personal cultivation in family. In order to help reach a better and deeper understanding of the related arguments, the paper cites relevant scriptures directly from both the Confucian classics and the Holy Bible to better certify the specific statements.Based on the discussions demonstrated in Chapter Two, the following chapter compares and contrasts the similarities, differences and the varying influences of Confucianism and Christianity. Thus it would be crystal clear that why people from the East and the West sometimes share something in common, but sometimes think and act differently. And finally a conclusion is reached at the end of the paper. The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to this world trend of intercultural communication and to contribute some insights into the comparison of (Confucianism and Christianity, and their stances of personal cultivation in particular, because in the twenty first century, there is a ramping trend of fusion between the East and the West, during this trend, we not only need to remember our national identity as shaped greatly by Confucianism, but also need to know about Christianity, which shaped the Western cultures the most. Never before have we had such fast and convenient communication tools, and never before in history have we human beings known each other so well, although there exists conflict among differing thoughts, the fusion of different cultures is unstoppable. Therefore, more researches are encouraged to get started in order to accelerate the speed of intercultural communication development and contribute more to the development of human civilization.
