Language researchers have recently shifted their interests from teachers'teaching methodology to learners'own learning. Therefore, the hot issues are how learners can take charge of their learning and how teachers help students to be self-regulated learners. In recent years, a lot of researches have been done into the relationship between language learning strategies, metacognition and language proficiency. As for the relationship between language proficiency and self-regulated learning, which combines learning strategies with metacognition, only a few studies could be referred. Thus, this study investigated some English majors'self-regulated learning abilities in English reading by using a revised questionnaire, collected students'reading achievements, analyzed the data and discussed the relationship between self-regulated learning and English reading comprehension achievements. The results are as follows:(1) According to the Pearson coefficients, we find that self-regulated learning ability has significant correlations with students'reading comprehension achievements.(2) All the three phases in the cycle of SRL, forethought phase, performance phase and self-reflection phase, have significant correlations with reading achievements. Goal-setting, intrinsic interest, attention focusing, self-instruction and self-evaluation all have significant correlations with reading achievements.(3) The seniors'self-regulated learning ability is lower than that of the sophomores.(4) For sophomores, efficient students use self-regulated learning strategies significantly more frequently than less proficient students. For seniors, there is no significant difference found between proficient students and less proficient students.Based on the results found in the study, some ideas and methods of cultivating students'self-regulated learning abilities have been presented in this thesis, such as fostering students'active participation, training the self-regulated learning in English reading have been suggested in this study.Of course, there are still some limitations of the research, for example, the sampling is small, and the questionnaire can be improved further in the future study.
