It has been becoming a hot research theme in education to provide effective supports for self-regulated learners, which can take full advantages of modern information technology.Although some relative studies have been done under the direction of advanced ideas of education, most existed learning modes focus on cognitive and affective developmentwhile usually ignoring metacognition-a critical ingredient to successful learning.Metacognition is an important concept in cognitive psychology, which consists of twobasic elements- knowledge of cognition and regulation of cognition. Learningcomprises not only the cognitive process of recognizing, processing, understanding learning materials , but also the metacognitive process of monitoring and regulating the process of learning. It is believed that metacognition is the key process of self-regulated learning and a crucial factor of successful learning as well. Therefore, as for a reasonable and efficacious learning environment, it is necessary and meaningful to acknowledge, cultivate and enhance the metacognitive capabilities of all learnersThis thesis mainly explores the essential process of online self-regulated learning integrating metacognitive process, and how to provide corresponding support for such learning mechanism. Firstly, the thesis tracks back the original ideas of self-regulated learning and metacognition, and then discusses the internal relationship between metacognition and web-based self-regulated learning. Secondly, based on the analysis of the inner principles and factors of self-regulated learning, an elementary mode is constructed, which focuses on the process of web-based metacognitive and self-regulated learning process. Thirdly, according to such a learning mode, it is suggested that supports be supplied at four aspects: metacognitive knowledge, the contexts of learning and applying metacognitive strategies, examples and scaffolds, tools for communication and cooperation. Finally, the function modules and system framework of Web-based Metacognitive and Self-regulated Learning Environment are presented, and trial tests and evaluations are undergone to validate the design of this environment.
