Compared with the traditional linguistics research stressing on the equity between form and meaning and the semantic relation based on content, contemporary linguistics and literature pay great attention to the interpersonal, changeable and consultative significance. The interpersonal meaning means that people use language to associate with the other people, establish and maintain interpersonal relationship and affect others' behavior. Meanwhile they also use language to express their view towards the world. Halliday takes the Mood and Modality as the main constituents of the interpersonal meaning. With the development of functional linguistics, the theoretical framework of the interpersonal meaning has been perfected and many devices of the realization of the interpersonal meaning have been cognized. Halliday constructed the Systemic Functional Grammar "for purposes of text analysis". Thus, there are some papers using Systemic Functional Grammar to analyze poems and novels at home and abroad. When we observe the translated works from the point of view of the interpersonal meaning, we will find that the extent to which the interpersonal meta-function of the translated works can be embodied in the same manner as the original works will influence the understanding of the readers from the target language. House (1998) points out if the translator's endeavour to carry over the source text's (ST) the interpersonal function will enable the target text (TT) reader to have some idea of the linguistic and cultural features of the ST. The higher the equivalence to the ST is, the better the quality of translation is(张美芳, 2005: 30).This thesis takes Scarlett's speech in Gone with the Wind and its two translations as the object of study, making a comparison between English version and Chinese versions, especially in mood, modality and evaluation and evaluating the degree of equivalence through the analysis of the interpersonal meaning of Scarlett's feminist consciousness. The analysis shows that the source text and the target text have equivalence and inequivalence of different degree in modality, mood and evaluation. The form equivalence is not the only standard to measure whether the translation is faithful or not. It is the key to the successful translation how the translator represent the characteristics of language and personality and mentality of the character and the successful communication of the character's achieving her purposes and intention through the conversations. Therefore, on the basis of the framework of the interpersonal meaning, we can understand the interpersonal meaning of the conversations more easily, which means a lot for us to translate novels.
