It isnot only a love story, but also a drama that reflects the change of life and experiencefor all the southerners during the Civil War. Women in Gone with the Wind showstrong will and intelligence that equal the strength and mentality of men. Despite theunfair rights between males and females, Gone with the Wind is a novel with thefeminist ideology.Scarlett O’Hara, the heroine totally overthrows the tradidtional image of woman. On the one hand, Scarlett has beautiful appearence which stimulates the maleprotective desires for woman; on the other hand, she is quite rebellious; and sheshoulders the hardships of her family and friends when troubles plague Scarlett.Margaret Mitchell creates a persistent and fearless female character, Scarlett O’Hara, who is the heorine with the premier feminist ideology and also puts this into practicefrom her fighting against the mainstream values and pursuing her own rights andpositions as a woman. The thesis employs the feminist critical theory, and analyzes Gone with the Windin the feminist angle of view. Proceeding from analysis of both the virtue and defectsof Scarlett’s personality, this thesis aims to explore the female rights and genderidentity in the patriarchy society, as well as the enlightments for modern women toguide the real life.
