Italian inherited directly many of its linguistic traits from Latin.A detailed investigation of Latin vocabulary in present Italian language may allow us to explore from a lexical point of view the linguistic relationship between Italian and Latin and the impact of Latin on Italian.Italian evolved from the Vulgar Latin, its vocabulary is constituted by three parts:the words inherited form Latin, the loanwords and the neologism. This thesis examines the categories and characteristics of Latin vocabulary in Italian.A brief introduction to the evolution of the morphology and the meaning of the words inherited form Latin and the formation of Italian neologism containing Latin morpheme is also included as a necessary supplement to the argument.Through statistical analysis,we can observe how the Latin loanwords and the neologism with Latin morpheme account for high percentage in individual category. This result provides ample evidence to the argument that Latin words occupy an important position in Italian which derived from Latin.
