As the heir of Charlemagne, the emperor of Carolingian Empire, Louis the Pious inherited a unified empire, turning on the empire's separation after his death, who was a transitional figure in medieval history. For a long time, both of Chinese and Western circles didn't attach importance to Louis the Pious and took negative attitude for him. After the mid-20th century, Western circles began to re-examine and research Louis the Pious, and also achieved many successes. However, till now, there is no systematic and in-depth analysis on Louis the Pious in domestic academic circle. In this paper, the author will conduct a comprehensive study of Louis the Pious. According to the introduction of Louis the Pious's life of Aquitania, the author has sorted out Louis's early events and characters; through the reform activities of Louis as an emperor, the analysis of the reasons for the separation of empire and also the interpretation of Louis's positive achievements , we can find out Louis's fault and merit clearly as well as his status and role in the history.Straightening out the problems mentioned above, differentiating and analyzing the various academic points, I believe that Louis the Pious had always been maintaining a unified empire, and had made many remarkable achievements, but just because the rebellion of his three oldest sons as well as the tendency of times, Carolingian Empire soon broken up after his death. So Louis the Pious was a tragic figure with success. However, there are plenty of events in the regin of Louis the Pious, besides the reform in the political, religious, legislative, military and other fields, there are also many activities about the economy, culture, diplomacy and so on, but the article doesn't include the latter. In a word, this is the first step on the study of Louis the Pious , there are still many questions unsolved, it would be a long time to finish it.
