Since the Peach Blossom Fan, a Marvel Tale(chuanqi) by K'ung shang-jen, appeared in the early years of the Qing Dynasty, there have emerged various adaptations of it.Looking at the cultural history of modem China, every adaptation which have great art impact is intrinsically connected with the social and cultural transformation of China and their continuous emergence have formed an important and rich artistic pedigree.The thesis will study at first how the authors of different versions of the Peach Blossom Fan in three periods have their cognitive awareness with the art media they used, as well as how the three works have their supposed audience based on this awareness.It will followed by analysis of how the effective use of the media means have created a conflict condition of history and narrative, and how the characters contributing to the achievement of theme and variations of aesthetic imagery. Finally, the thesis will study how these works in different socio-cultural context engender the aesthetic identification on their supposed audience with the changes of art media imagery through their different aesthetic mechanisms and programs of content, so as to meet their intrinsic appeals of culture value.
