The object of study for this paper is the science fiction in late Qing dynasty (from 1900 - 1911). Based on the other professors' study of science fiction in late Qing dynasty, in this paper, I focus on the period of late Qing science fiction, definition of its own and modernity, and analyze variety of expressions of the modern nature in the science fiction, from the format, structure, writings in the vernacular to the spirit inside the lines. We see how urgency intellectual at that time felt about the situation of China; we see their desire of the advanced technology, fantasy of those technology, the dream of strong China in the future. But on the other hand, we also see the conflict in their mind about the insistence for traditional view and philosophy. Even in the developed China in the future, the traveler in the fiction war very proud of Chinese traditional philosophy, Confucianism for instance, thus the core power of the Chinese civilization, who took the leadership of the world again from the hand of westerns was the gentle emperor standing at the side of humaneness and righteousness.Consequently, the modernity reflected in the late Qing science fiction is an over-expression, less literariness, more instrumentality. However, we can feel what the circumstances in late Qing dynasty influent the intellectual and their hopes inserted in the lines.
