Novalis is more a poet with intense political ideal than just a pioneer of the German Romanticism. Due to some historical reasons, the German Romanticism has long been called"negative Romanticism", and Novalis has long been neglected in the academic field. In recent years, domestic and foreign scholars have successively done varieties of systematic research on Novalis relating to the fields such as politics, religion and culture, and achieved fruitful results. This thesis is drawn up to give a complement to the study of Novalis'political concept, especially on Novalis' concept of"ideal country".On the basis of Christians'concept of time, Novalis put forward the Syllogism conception of history. Namely he divided human history into three periods: The Past—the"Paradise"of human, The Present—"The Lost Garden", and The Future—"Paradise Regained". In this thesis, the three aspects of Novalis'"Utopia"will be analyzed, and Novalis'"poetic country"will be expounded. This thesis has six parts: preface,"The Lost Garden"—Novalis and the Age of Novalis,"Golden Age"of the country—Novalis'remembrance of"Paradise","Paradise Regained"—the reconstruction of"Utopia", the political system of"Utopia"—the Monarchy, and conclusion. The preface focuses on analyzing the present academic research status of Novalis, as well as academic significance of the text. The first chapter, which is given a description of the social background of Novalis, has three parts aiming at the crisis of faith, omnipotent rational and chaos social order. The second chapter has two parts, which is given to a description of the Ideal Age—the medieval social life (the social life of the Middle Ages), in which the unification of religious belief and the stability of social order provide the foundation for the ideal society. The third chapter focuses on Novalis'ideal country—"Poetic country", which includes two parts: the origin and the construction of the"poetic country". Because of the important position of the monarch in Novalis'"Poetic country", the ideal state's political structure—the monarchy is specifically discussed in the forth chapter. And comments on Novalis'"poetic country"together with the practical significance of Novalis'"poetic country"are drawn in the conclusion.
