Discourse analysis is one of the primary topics in linguistic study. It receives growing attention from various linguists, and tends to be the main area of linguistic research. Cohesion is an essential concept in discourse analysis, which is studied much more in the non-structural area than in the area of structural part. Structural cohesion, however, is an important part of discourse cohesion and needs further study.This dissertation attempts to apply cohesion theory into the study of literature works, and the target is the representative piece The 1,000,000 pound Bank-Note written by the famous American writer, Mark Twain. The paper analyzes The 1,000,000 pound Bank-Note in the cohesive characteristics of transitivity as well as mood within structural cohesion on one hand. On the other hand, the paper studies the cohesion of componential relation and cohesion of organic relation in non-structural area. The paper displays the cohesive characteristics of the novel, and reaches a conclusion that structural and non-structural cohesion are the main cohesive features of The 1,000,000 pound Bank-Note.The cohesion research reveals the main writing style of Mark Twain in linguistic view, and also expands internal structure of the novel. Thus, the study of discourse cohesion in The 1,000,000 pound Bank-Note helps people deeply appreciate it and obtain a concrete understanding of its discourse organization. Furthermore, it is a new attempt to apply structural cohesion theory in the study of literature works.
