In the era of information explosion, more and more Mongolian learners have not only realized the importance of English reading, but also the significance of efficient reading. With the influence of information society, therefore, it is obvious that in modem society, there is a need for Mongolian learners to acquire good ability in reading in English. However, considering the high requirements of the society, Mongolian learners' English reading competence is unsatisfactory. One of the reasons is that traditional English teaching focuses mainly on the linguistic aspects level, such as vocabulary, sentence and grammar. As a result, Mongolian learners have a large number of vocabularies and can make correct sentences; but their reading ability on the discourse level is not developed effectively. Most of the problems they meet in reading are concerned with the global meaning or macro—structure of discourse. This paper tries to find a way that an instructor can help Mongolian learners to improve their English reading ability in a macro—structure perspective by the application of the discourse pattern theories. Through the comparison and contrast of discourse patterns and thinking patterns based on different languages, some suggestions are as follows:Firstly, the knowledge of English discourse patterns can play an important role in comprehending the macro—structure of discourse and Mongolian learner should strengthen the consciousness of reading from a Discourse—Pattern Perspective. Secondly, more practice on discourse pattern is needed for Mongolian learner. This is helpful in avoiding the prevailing preference of micro—elements, such as word and grammar. This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter one introduces the situation of English learning in Mongolian nationality community in Inner Mongolia. Chapter Two concerns the knowledge of discourse and discourse pattern. In Chapter Three, the previous researches about discourse and discourse pattern are reviewed in western countries, China and Mongolian Nationality Community. Chapter Four is a comparison and contrast of thinking patterns and discourse patterns related to English, Chinese and Mongolian languages. By doing so, it is found that Mongolian discourse pattern is more similar with English. The two discourse patterns have the similar characters, concise and explicit. Based on this, the author boldly infers that Mongolian learner can understand English articles easily. Chapter Five is the concluding part. The author gives a summary and some suggestions about English reading learning. However, due to the author's limited knowledge and the limitation of the research itself, there is still room for further research.
