The Translator's Creativity In Xu Zhimo's Poetry Translation

It is no doubt that Xu Zhimo should be remembered as one important figure in New Culture Movement,this is not only because he is an initiator of the New Culture Movement,but because he created and translated a large number of poems in vernacular Chinese.According to statistics,Xu Zhimo translated sixty-one poems by twenty-six poets in his short life,and his published poetry collections are Zhimo's poems,A Night in Florence,The Tiger,and Roaming.And his poems,whether they are created or translated,are full of feelings,the expressiveness is fresh and strange and has its own feature,his poems are widely favored,and have their great influence until today.People have kept their interests in Xu Zhimo as a poet for a long time,they want to find out the regularity and method of New Poetry creation from the study of Xu Zhimo's poems, but they neglect the study on Xu Zhimo's poetry translation,in fact,Xu's poem creation,especially his great contribution to the formation of New Poetry,is closely associated with his poetry translation.In other words, Xu Zhimo's success in poem creation benefits from his poetry translation. Therefore,the study of Xu Zhimo's poetry translation,not only can help us have a deep understanding of the production and development of the New Poetry,but also can help us find out a way for the study subject of poetry translation.In poetry translation,the saying that a translated poem should be like a poem is the common knowledge of many translators,it is also the evaluation standard of poetry translation.In order to make the translated poem be like a poem,at first,the translator must really understand poetry,and he must be one poet himself.In this respect,Xu Zhimo is worthy of the name of poetry translator.Xu Zhimo received a good education of traditional Chinese culture,and he was familiar with western culture,and this helped him do great contribution to the cultural exchange between China and the West.There are two forms for poetry translation,one is the form of classical Chinese poetry,the other is the form of vernacular Chinese New Poetry,and each of these two ways has its strong and weak points,but the nature of the two is the same that they both seek the beauty of poetry.As one initiator,Xu Zhimo advocated that poetry creation and translation should be in vernacular Chinese.Xu Zhimo made his efforts to retain the form and spirit of the source text in order to realize the beauty of translated poems.Besides,the prominent feature of Xu Zhimo's poetry translation is that he was bold in changing and creating the expressiveness of source texts and the conventional expressiveness of target language,that's to say,the syntax defamiliarization,so as to realize the creative world of the source text, and this makes his translated poems give readers wonderful feelings from reading the very common words,and this makes his translated poems have the beauty of aerial quality.In this thesis,we will do further appreciation and analysis of Xu Zhimo's poetry translation based on defamiliarization and the skopos theory.As one initiator of Chinese New Poetry,Xu Zhimo's poetry translations may not be always excellent,but his great achievements in poetry translation bring about a deep consideration for the translation circle:the translator should have his endowments and wide knowledge in his field,he should fully display his subjectivity,and he should be bold enough to create new forms for poetry translation.
