The Study Of Zhejiang Zheng In Shanghai

Like other kinds of arts, music performance has given birth to various genres and schools. There are five schools of performance of the guzheng zither, a traditional Chinese instrument, among which is the longstanding Zhejiang School. It formed its own local characteristics in Ming and Qing dynasties. Those have direct relations to the modern Wulin zheng are Hangzhou Tanhuang and Hangbang String and Pipe Ensembles.For a long historical period, the Wulin Zheng had just been more of a accompanying instrument of Hangzhou Tanhuang and Hangbang String and Pipe Ensembles than an independent solo instrument. Hangzhou Tanhuang performers scattered in World War II. Before 1949, with the decline of Hangzhou Tanhuang and Hangbang String and Pipe Ensembles, Wulin Zheng also became a rare thing. But Zhejiang Zheng was not lost, a group of artists in Hangzhou, represented by Wang Xunzhi, had established a national music institute since 1928. The revival of Zhejiang Zheng began in 1956 when Wang began to teach in Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Although greatly developed in Shanghai, Zhejiang Zheng did not abandon its roots in Zhejiang. Its repertoire and playing skills all embody its old tradition.My paper emphasized on the development of Zhejiang Zheng in Shanghai, including adaptation of traditional repertory, creation of new pieces, improvement of the instrument (the invention of the butterfly Zheng with 21 strings and an S-shaped contour), improvement of performing skills and education in this field.Wang's innovation of Zheng was not limited in the campus, nor was it simply a teaching activity. He and his students did this as a cause and mission. Shanghai, especially its universities and colleges, is a platform where the East and the West meets. It is only in such a space like Shanghai where cultures blend and innovations take place, that Zhejiang Zheng has a chance to regain its vigor.
