Stuart Hall is an important theorist in culture study field, with his culture study known for its openness, plurality and outstanding practicality, producing wide influence in the culture study field. The intersubject of culture study and Hall's research objective make him combine the different advantages from utilizing different discipline research methods.Since Hall is the representative of Turn of Linguistic and Semiotics in Birmingham School of Culture Studies, his semiotics thoughts run through his theoretical proposal and culture critic practice, in that it is embodied on the study of media problems, the construction of cultural representation, as well as the problems of race and gender. The culture study way of Hall has a profound influence on some culture theory and criticism that followed. In order to seek for the characteristics and theoretical rules of Hall's Culture theoretical study, this thesis in mainly focusing on the semiotic orientation of Hall's Culture theoretical study, with close attention to his medium discourse theory, culture representation theory, ideological discourse theory, and his critical practice, giving consideration to the studies of gender, race and multicultural problems in his later period as well; in the meantime, the research also extends to the other three eminent scholars of similar study purports and continuity, with special attention to Fiske's Cultural Symbol Space, the Logic of Symbol Consumption of Feathstone in the postmodernist context, and the Symbolic Aesthetics Study of Welsch. At last, a concise analysis will be carried out on the values and limits of Hall's cultural semiotics, and the referential meanings for researches of Chinese Classic, Current Cultural Aesthetics, and Cultural Poetics.
