This dissertation is a two-sided research which involves both the study of the academic history and the discussion on art poetics. It mainly aims at Stephen owen's Chinese literatry theory. By the beginning with Owen's pivotal viewpoint, this research will highlight the following implications to Chinese Ancient poetics'study: the artistic visual angle, art poetics conception and art standpoint. This article considers that the mainstream of Chinese Ancient poetics is a long, continued poetry art Tradition which is shaded by unilateral modern research. On the one hand, the Chinese Ancient poetics tradition has outstanding artistic character. On the other hand, poetry art had been a bone of contention at all times. As the crucial aspect of multiplex values, poetry art had all through conflicted with old authoritative concept of Qing-Zhi (emotion-intention) and the uppermost aesthetic ideality of the Natural. As the culture precondition, the concept and ideality had shaped and restricted Chinese poetry art. Though the poetic theory can adopt a good many ways, the viewpoint of art poetics can furthest correspond to art standpoint and will bring a new research outlook which the poetic theory integrate into poetry text interpretations.This thesis has five chapters as the main body.Introduction clues that Stephen Owen regards poetry composition practice as a basic visual angle of poetic theory study. For the centre of poetic, poetry composition practice is also poetry art. And the technique poetic theory highlights poetry art. But in the modern culture text, poetry art is debatable.Chapter one analyzes the connotation of poetry art on Chinese Ancient poetics and gives two examples of poetic theory study about Ts'ang-langs shih-hua and Shih P'in to deeply explain differences between Stephen Owen and many Chinese scholars. The super-organic tropism and theory standpoint result in narrow visual field of study and close over the existence of Chinese Poetry Art Tradition.Chapter two emphasizes particularly on expanding discussions of value arguments of poetry art and points out that poetry art is the point of intersection of multiplex values. At the same time, this part answers the question on traditional reason why poetry art is shaded.Chapter three indicates that in the future, the promising research will combine poetic theory tradition with poetry text interpretation. It can bring new vital force to old Chinese Ancient poetics.Conclusion reflects on an important interrelated problem about the comprehending of dialogues between west and east and how to treat our traditional values.
