As a contrastive study, this thesis explores how Chinese and English tourist publicities realize their communicative purposes and functions in different social and cultural contexts. By integrating the approaches of genre analysis of Hasan, Swales and Bhatia, the author works out the generic structures of Chinese and English tourist publicities, analyzes and contrast each move and step, and examines the distribution of evaluative resources in both Chinese and English tourist publicities. At last, the author discusses the translators' role in C-E translation of tourist publicities, puts forward some C-E translation strategies and suggestions on writing tourist publicities in English. The thesis has chosen 30 Chinese tourist publicities (CTPs) and 30 English tourist publicities (ETPs) as data. The contrastive study shows that both CTPs and ETPs share the same four-move structures, and employ a lot of attitude resources, especially the positive appreciation at lexical and semantic levels. The main differences between CTPs and ETPs can be generalized into three aspects: (1) they employ different step strategies to realize the related move function; (2) CTPs have an objective appreciation of the tour destinations, while few ETPs have the writers' subjective affect and judgment; (3) CTPs are more formal but less accessible in style, while ETPs are more practical in functions. These differences are attributed to the different social and cultural contexts as well as the different language nature. The study has its significance in both theories and practice. Theoretically, the study contributes to the development of Chinese discourse analysis and advances the contrastive study of Chinese and English tourist publicities. Practically, the study helps us better appreciate the social and communicative nature of tourist publicities, and sheds light on C-E translation and writing tourist publicities in English. As a contrastive study, the thesis also helps dispel some cultural stereotypes and thus facilitates the cross-cultural communication.
