Summary On The Defense System Of Ningxia Military Town In Ming Dynasty

Ningxia Military Town was one of the nine Military Towns in the Ming Dynasty, which played a significant role in the defense of the Northern boundary. However, the modern academic study focused more on the macro field, which wasn't penetrated and detailed enough and lacked of systemic and micro researches. This thesis, by utilizing the history materials of Ming Dynasty and combining the local records and archaeological materials, was going to do a deep and systemic research on the defense system of Ningxia Military Town. Firstly, this thesis introduced the form of northern defense system in Ming Dynasty and verified the specific time of Ningxia Military Town's setup. Secondly, it discussed from the four parts respectively, namely the garrison officer, the sub-governor and military officer system, the supervision officer system and the civilian officer. Thirdly, it introduced the garrison soldiers there, especially their amount, setup and resource and supply along with the supply to the horses. Fourthly, it presented the defense work of Ningxia Military Town, mainly concentrating on the construction process, the side-wall, castle and abutment of the defense work. Finally, it turned to the characteristic and shortage of Ningxia Military Town in the defense as well as its role in the defense of Northwest in the Ming Dynasty.
