Autobiographies of modern Chinese authors refers to autobiographical works written by modern Chinese writers during the first half of the twentieth century who used modern vernacular Chinese to record individuals' life process in a novel literature context, in which they demonstrated unique existence and inner awakening of individuals, revealing modern consciousness in and between their lines. Autobiographies of modern authors were enlightened, advocated and practiced by such authors as Guo Moruo and Hu Shi once had an enormous impact on Modern Chinese literature history, and a number of writers have recorded their life process in the form of autobiography. A study of these autobiographies can not only help to understand some facts excluded in official history, but also can come to understand a nation's secret history from the writers' life experience; more importantly, the study of autobiographies not only help researchers understand the background of the authors' other works in other literary genres, but through assessment of autobiographies reevaluate the writers' literary achievements, reinterpret the many implicit contents in other literary genres, and reassess the real value of the literature works. Thus this paper focuses on an analysis of configuration and form in Autobiography of Modern Chinese Authors. It makes an initial combing of autobiographies of modern Chinese authors in a novel literature context, based on aesthetics demonstrated in autobiographies themselves, revealing the richness and complexity of autobiographies of modern Chinese authors.This paper focuses on analysis of four types of autobiography, and illustrates from six aspects. Introduction in the first section explains the origin, purpose, value and exploratory idea of this paper. The second to the fifth section focuses on analysis of four types of autobiography. Specifically, (1) epic-type autobiography: with Guo Moruo, Hu Shi and Mao Dun as its representatives, exploring the social effect and characteristics of this type, in which it involves individuals into magnificent historical account; (2)ambition-type autobiography: with Shen Congwen, Lin Yutang, Qu Qiubai as its representatives, exploring the creation motivation, features narrative ways of these type writers; (3) emotional pouring-type autobiography: with such writers as Ba Jin, Xie Bingying as its representatives, exploring the creation features and aesthetic styles of this type of autobiography; (4) "pure literature" -type autobiography: with Yu Dafu and others as its representatives, from autobiographical theories, exploring the literary appeal, artistic trait and the correspondent special aesthetic effect of this type of autobiography. The last section draws a conclusion: based on analysis and discussion of the previous four autobiographical types as epic-type, ambition-type, emotional pouring-type and "pure literature"-type, it makes a summary of creation of autobiographies of modern Chinese authors, so as to provide "reference" for obtaining nutritious "inspiration" in current autobiography creation. |
