As a summit period of Chinese feudal society, Tang Dynasty had reached its peak in every field, such as politics, economic, culture, art etc. In Tang Dynasty, the elegant and graceful manner of women, ritzy clothes and charming appearance, collocated with excessively abundant and luxury garments and accessories, have jointly composed a classical chapter of history of Chinese costume.In virtue of ground of arguments in history along with classical court beauty paintings of Tang Dynasty, this thesis sums up the customs of dress and women make-up in Tang Dynasty and probes the evolution factors, characteristics of woman costume and face make-up in term of the society situation at different age of Tang Dynasty. Further more, it analyzes all kinds of signs and symbols for make-up of court lady in Tang Dynasty, such as golden flower, eyebrow ornament, hairstyle, face rouge, forehead ornament etc. Afterward, this thesis try to explore the reasons for their formation, features and combination styles, and then made a further analysis one by one by applicant of essential Semiotics theories Signifer and Signified. Finally, this thesis summarizes the symbolized significance of face make-up for court lady in Tang Dynasty. Besides, it points out that people's demand in the pursuit of fashion and selfhood increases more and more with the utmost abundance of material life in modern society, and that through changes of thousands of years, the symbolized feature of face make-up for court lady in Tang Dynasty has absorbed a fine collection of modern fashion and innovation, and is now taking effect on the development of modern fashion, and represents a trend and value of recreation and reapplication.
