Traditional Chinese medicine is one of the outstanding cultural heritages of Chinese nation. Under the influence and guidance of the thoughts of materialism and dialectics, and after several thousand years of medical practice, traditional Chinese medicine has gradually formed and developed into a unique theoretical medical system, which has made an indelible and substantial contribution to the health of Chinese people and peoples of the world. In recent years, traditional Chinese medicine has increasingly attracted the attention of the international medical field, and its translation work has also gained the further development. However, with the in-depth and far-ranging conduct of the translation of Chinese medicine, more and more problems are emerging; some problems directly affect the dissemination of traditional Chinese medicine to the rest of the world. Therefore, a number of domestic and foreign scholars and translators have started to focus on research work of the English translation of traditional Chinese medicine. Their original research has laid a practical and theoretical basis for the healthy development of the translation of traditional Chinese medicine. However, due to the differences of the cultural background, areas of expertise and translation theories, it is difficult to form a unified English translation principles and methods of traditional Chinese medicine, while the English translation of traditional Chinese medicine terminology presents the tendency of various schools. The author will analyze the English translation principles and methods of traditional Chinese medicine terminology from the cultural perspective on the basis of the valuable experience of predecessors, trying to let the translators take cultural differences between China and Western countries into consideration in the process of translating the traditional Chinese medicine terminology.Five chapters are included in this thesis. Chapter one is the introduction part. Through analyzing the relationships among culture, language and translation, the importance of cultural translation in enhancing its cultural influence is discussed.Chapter two has a comprehensive discussion on traditional Chinese medicine from the aspects of its definition, basic characteristics, cultural factors inherent in it, furthermore, the characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine terminology is also briefly described.Chapter three presents the brief history, the achievements and the problems of the English translation of traditional Chinese medicine, meanwhile, how to use the cultural turn to solve the problems that exist in the English translation of traditional Chinese medicine is discussed.Chapter four devotes considerable space to discussing the four main translating principles and five main methods from the cultural perspective according to the valuable experiences of other translators.The last chapter is a conclusion. To analyze the English translation principles and methods of traditional Chinese medicine terminology from the cultural perspective will surely give impetus to the establishment of traditional Chinese medicine translation studies. However, The English translation of traditional Chinese medicine is an arduous undertaking. It needs not only good translators'participation, but also needs the positive and effective guidance of Chinese government.
