An Account Of Traditional Chinese Medicine Terminology Translation

In recent years,the export volume of Chinese medicinal patented products has increased to a certain extent,but their path to internationalization is beset with different obstacles.Therefore,the translation of Chinese medicinal patent documents can be regarded as a requisite step for Chinese medicinal patented products to move towards internationalization.Traditional Chinese Medicine(hereinafter referred to “TCM”)terminology is the basis and essence of Traditional Chinese Medicine.Naturally,TCM terminology translation matters in the translation of Chinese medicinal patent documents.However,the medical knowledge,philosophical concepts and profound literary nature of TCM combine to make terminology translation a tough problem with translators.By taking the translation of Chinese medicinal patent abstracts as an example and based on analysis of parallel texts and large amounts of translation practice,this report summarizes three main principles underlying TCM terminology translation.The three principles include the correctness principle,the linguistic economy principle and the consistency principle.In addition,the report mainly discusses that two problems with TCM terminology translation---improper translation due to the violation of the correctness principle and redundancy due to the violation of the linguistic economy principle.To solve these problems,the reporter also puts forward some solutions.To a certain extent,the three principles,the problems occurred in the practice and the solutions proposed by the reporter not only reflect parts of the status quo of TCM terminology translation,but hold implications for talent training in TCM translation.
