Hani Folk Song "Haba" Research

"Haba" is the ancient Folk Ballade of Hani people in Yunnan province, which exists in all the folk customs and rituals of the Hani society and generally sang publicly at the feast when celebrating the festivals, building new houses and having wedding and funerals. It plays an important role in inheriting and passing on the musical culture and involves every aspect of Hani society, which is regarded as the "text book" for Hani people to impart history knowledge, producing experience and traditional culture, and at the same time, a lustrous pearl of our Intangible Cultural Heritage.This thesis takes "Haba"-the Hani folk ballade as the main line and does research on issues from the migration history of Hani people, the introduction of musical resources and the characteristic of musical style. It demonstrates the function and value of "Haba" in Hani society and gives thinking and analysis on protecting, inheriting and developing "Haba" folk ballade. As a member of Hani people, the author has the immediate experience on listening "Haba" and undertakes the responsibility to safeguard and inherit the traditional culture of Hani groups. The reason why the author choose this topic as his M.A. thesis is to encourage himself to explore and study the traditional culture of Hani people and makes his own contribution to the inheritance and development of Hani people's folk arts.
