With the development of globalization, the International communication and cooperation are increasing, and learning English is becoming the basic demand of talents in modern society. Motivation, as a significant factor which can influence students' English learning directly, has become an important subject for research in the field of English learning. Lambert and Gardner start the research into the second language learning motivation since 1950s. Although there have been considerable investigations and researches related to motivation in the second language learning abroad and at home, the researches on the Independent College students' English learning motivation are far less than adequate, not to mention researches on how to cultivate independent college students' English learning motivation. Independent colleges are new things of Chinese higher education reform in recent years, and they will gradually become an important part of our higher education development. However, because the short history and the specific characteristics of independent colleges, their teaching quality and academic ability are not very high, and their students' English learning motivation is quite weak. On the basis of researches into motivation abroad and at home, my research takes 140 students in Chongqing Nanfang Translators College of Sichuan International Studies University for example, investigating these students with Questionnaire to know the present situation of English learning motivation in independent colleges. The survey shows:1. students' inner motivation of English learning in independent colleges is weak. 2. Students'external motivation of English learning in independent colleges is strong. 3. Students'achievement motivation in independent colleges is very weak. 4. Students'situational motivation in independent colleges is very weak. According to these results, I analyze some reasons:1. on students: students' English study foundations are very weak; they are not interested in English; their autonomous Learning ability is very poor; their receptivity of themselves and their college is poor. 2. On teachers:teachers don't have much enthusiasm for their English teaching; their comprehensive quality is not very high. 3. On independent college:most independent colleges don't have a good English learning environment; independent colleges don't pay much attention to their English teachers'cultivation. 4. On society and family. My research mainly proposes two pieces of advice to cultivate students' English learning motivation in independent colleges:1. on teachers:teachers should take some good teaching methods to cultivate students' inner motivation in independent colleges; teachers should pay more attention to emotion communication between them and students, understanding students' study needs and psychological features; teachers should cultivate students'autonomous Learning ability about English, increasing their sense of achievement on English learning; teachers should pay much attention to self development. 2. on independent colleges: independent colleges should rich students' English life in school and set up a good English learning environment; independent colleges should put into more money to improve college's hardware environment; independent colleges should pay more attention to teachers'cultivation; independent colleges should value receptivity of teachers and students. This research includes five parts:the first part mainly introduces the research reason, research purpose, the present research situation, research target, research thoughts, research methods and research meaning. The second part mainly sums up some related motivation theories. The third part is about knowing the present situation of English learning motivation in independent colleges according to investigation. The fourth part analyzes main reasons about the present situation from students, teachers, colleges, family and society. The last part mainly proposes some advice of cultivating students' English learning motivation in independent colleges.
