Interior furnishing, an interior art design, is, on the basis of interior decoration, an overall functional and aesthetic planning and arrangement of the furnitures, living utensils, lighting equipment, and ornaments etc., aiming at beautifying room space and delighting aesthetic sentiment.In recent years, with the improvement of living standards, people's requirements for the interior furnishing are becoming increasingly higher. The furnishing styles of the Chinese traditional vernacular residences are widely accepted by and popular with the general public. Therefore, it has become an issue of great concern for designers to have a thorough understanding of the design style of the Chinese traditional furnishing, to combine the Chinese traditional furnishing style and modern room space, to integrate practicality and artistic quality, in order to satisfy the higher spiritual demands of the people.The present paper takes the furnishing style of the Chinese traditional vernacular residences in Ming and Qing Dynasties as its research object, for the development of the Chinese ancient feudal society was at its height in Ming and Qing Dynasties, during which, after a long historical accumulation, the design features and concepts of interior furnishing art gradually came to maturity and perfection. Ming and Qing Dynasties were the golden ages for the development of the interior furnishing art of the Chinese traditional vernacular residences.In the light of the regional characteristics, the furnishing style of the traditional vernacular housing in Ming and Qing Dynasties can be classified into 2 types:the furnishing style of Beijing courtyard dwellings with the houses of Northern part of China as its representative and the furnishing style of Suzhou house with garden dwellings of Southern part of China as its representative. This paper, with the furnishing features of Beijing courtyard dwellings and Suzhou garden dwellings as its research object, usingthe method of longitudinal comparison, demonstrates and analyzes the characteristics of the Chinese traditional vernacular residences in Ming and Qing dynasties, in order to explore the characteristics of the historical development of the traditional vernacular residences' furnishing and analyze the origin, artisitc features and cultural connotation of the furnishing style, in the hope of precipitating the inheritance of the art of furnishing design of traditional vernacular residences in Ming and Qing Dynasties and enabling it to be better used for reference and widely applied in modern interior design and decoration.
