As news serves as a vital tool with which different sorts of information are transmitted, it is necessary to make a profound study of English news translation. This thesis argues that Nida's functional equivalence (FE) theory is most appropriate for translation of English news. First, the thesis makes an overall study of FE. Next, the thesis surveys recent relevant studies and mentions limitations of news translation before pointing out the necessity of conducting a discussion of it. Then, it briefly introduces the basic knowledge of English news and its particular language features. Finally, the author discusses the feasibility of applying FE to English news translation and investigates how to apply FE to English news translation at lexical, syntactical and rhetorical levels in detail. In addition, the author analyses the Chinese versions of some English news texts in line with FE. In this thesis, the author manages to discuss English news translation guided by FE theory at lexical, syntactical, rhetorical and textual levels, which is a new attempt to explore English news translation. The thesis proves that FE is a practical principle suitable for English news translation. With FE theory as its guide, English news translation is expected to be of higher quality and better effect. It is sincerely hoped that this research will enlighten translators of English news and make a little contribution to the progression of research on English news and to its better translation in China.
