Hui Yuan Yin Yi, the early interpretation of pronunciation and meanings in Buddhist sutra, is not only one of the classics of the Buddhism, but also a famous work for linguistic study. It has 2 volumes and contains plenty of content involving with various social and cultural aspects of religious, philology, language, literature, art and the history of communication between China and other countries. It is of essential academic value with regards to philology, linguistics and the research on traditional culture. Hua Yan Jing has different types: 40 volumes, 60 volumes and 80 volumes which causes different editions of Hui Yuan Yin Yi. We mainly studied on Hui Yuan Yin Yi while compared with the related materials in Japan.It is pointed out that Hui Yuan Yin Yi could mainly be divided into two series: Gaoli Collections and Qisha Collections. The Jin edition, Jingangsi edition and Qisi edition of Xuan Ying Yin Yi probably came from the same book while Yongle edition of Xuan Ying Yin Yi is quite different from the three editions. Dazhi edition, Jingangsi edition of Xin Hua Yan Jing Yin Yi is the combination of the Hui Yuan Yin Yi and Xuan Ying Yin Yi by a Japanese writer.The feature of the characters in the writing paper is concluded through the comparison of the block-printed edition and the writing paper of Hua Yan Yin Yi.The ancient book of Fang Yan and Cang Ji Pian is compared and collected. We also discuss the academic value of Hui Yuan Yin Yi in language study, the study of Chinese ancient books, and the study in lexicography and history of culture.
