Functionalist Translation Theory And Subtitle Translation For Feng's Xiaogang's Comedy

Film is a mass media mean to disseminate culture information. With globalization progress and the vigorous development of the film industry, film subtitle translation, as an important component of non-literary translation and audiovisual translation, attracts more and more attention at home and abroad. For making foreign audience to understand China in a correct and direct way, the film subtitle translation from Chinese to English plays a vital role. On the basis of predecessors'research, this paper researches film subtitle translation in the way of case study from the perspective of the functionalist translation theory.In the third chapter, the paper expounds the functionalist translation theory, and existing research results. The specific features and constraints of film subtitle translation are also discussed, as well as the factors influence the choice of subtitle translation strategies, and then points out the possibility of applying functionalist theory. According to"Skopos theory"of functionalist theory, subtitle translation is a purposeful activity, of which the guiding principle is the purpose of translation activity. Translator should adopt different translation strategies in order to solve different purposes. What's more, film subtitle translation is also an interpersonal interaction. Director's purpose also determines the choice of strategy, in addition, as the target text receiver, audiences have their own requirement on subtitle, which should be certainly taken into account of the factor influencing choice of strategy. Furthermore, subtitle translation should correspond with"Coherence rule"and"Loyalty rule": both acceptability of target audience and relationship between TT and ST are aspects need to be considered.In the fourth chapter, this paper uses the analyzing methods of functionalist theory to analyze the film subtitle translation of two comedies: If You Are the One and The Bigshot's Funeral. In China, the famous director Feng Xiaogang creates the model of New Year's Film, widely accepted by Chinese audiences. For further success in international film market, high quality subtitle translation would be helpful in acceptability of target audience and annotation of Chinese humor. Following this, the subtitler adopts strategies, such as reduction, condensation, domestication, omission, etc. to guarantee the fulfillment of translation Skopos.
