The four levels are the based layer, the painting layer, the ready-made layer, and the protection layer. This structure is applied to majority of Kiefer's mixed-media works created around the end of 20th century. A great deal of materials, besides the pigments, Can be found out in every layer. As the following, the dissertation discusses Kiefer's study of material culture and grasp of material content in the process of creating with the three points:"Plumbum, as a base material";"Salt, as a painting material";"Hair, as a ready-made"."Plumbum", "salt", or "hair", No matter what material is much more than a pure material, respectively gluing the corresponding history, culture, and religion. It is hair, mentioned in Paul Celan's"death fugue", combined with the corresponding western culture, especially in some literary works, that closely associates with Kiefer's exploration of Shulamith.Generalizing from the discussions above about the typical materials in the three structure layers, it is the main content of chapter 4, effects and activities of the materials in mixed-media paintings. It is elaborated that the effects come through the matter-sense, including three levels: the texture of materials, the memory of materials, and the psyche of materials. To strengthen and to spread the matter-sense, several theories are touched upon: the thought roughly translated as"lend a thing to come round", some points of Reception Theory, and the Synesthesia proposition advanced by Qian Zhong Shu.In the textual coda part, some personal studies and works of the writer are described, after the research of Kiefer's materials.
