Eileen Chang's works has its unique position in the history of modern Chinese literature. Shanghai was an "isolated island" during 1940's, where and when Eileen Chang made her debut, and with her great talents, she won the admirations of lots of readers, as well as the attention of literary criticism. Simone de Beauvoir had said: "Women are gradually developed". Men were still the center of the realistic world. As dominators, men not only put women at the bottom of the hierarchy of culture and society, but also owned the rights to interpret ideology. As a result, they could easily gain access to the control of the symbolic system of literature, the creation of theories of languages and the interpretation of meaning of language in literature. Women's submissive role was fixed in the men-dominated system, by satisfying various desires of men both mentally and physically. Women's miserable situations had greatly concerned Eileen Chang. In this thesis, we studied in detail women's roles in the works of Eileen Chang and explored the echoes of feminist in her works.The first chapter gives a brief introduction on Eileen Chang's works, explains why she had chosen each specific female role, reviews previous related work, highlights the significance of this thesis'topic and introduces the methods for studying this topic. The second chapter summarizes and analyzes women's roles in Eileen Chang's works and illustrates the difficult lives of various female roles. The third chapter is the center of this research work and analyzes the underlying reasons that led to the difficult lives and the oppressions of the female roles using the theories of feminist. The forth chapter focuses on the responses of the oppressed female roles and how they fought against the oppression. The fifth chapter focuses on the mind of the author Eileen Chang and why she created those female roles, based her unique living time and experiences, as well as comparisons to other female writers during her time. Through the analysis of the third and forth chapters, we will answer questions such as:whether female roles are oppressed in Eileen Chang's works, what's the level of the oppression and whether the female roles had fought against oppression, etc.
