To display the various female images in the works Eileen Chang had created, the description of various"Xiao" was used as one of her unique writing techniques. However,in Karen s,Kingsbury's translation of Eileen Change works, many descriptions of the Chinese character "Xiao" were omitted, and some of the translations of Chinese character "Xiao" were inaccurate.Based on the theory of literary translation and context and the theory of imagology in comparative literature, this paper aims to probe into the influence of the translation of Chinese character "Xiao" on the representation of female images in Eileen Chang's works.Four pieces of novellas were selected from Eileen Chang's works as the text materials, from which the phrases about Chinese character "Xiao" and their translation were collected. The readers' reviews were obtained from relevant websites,in which the female images are the reference. This paper makes a contextual analysis of "Xiao" and its English versions trying to explore the reasons for such English translations. With the theory of context and literary translation and the theory of imagology, this paper analyzes the influence of the translation of Chinese character "Xiao" in Eileen Chang's works on the representation of female images, providing reference for the representation of characters in literary translation. At last, this paper summarizes the research findings and puts forward suggestions for further research. The research results indicate that:(1)Chinese character“Xiao”can display female images in Eileen Chang?s works. The statistics and classification of "Xiao" in four selected novels indicates that the top three high frequency phrases of "Xiao" respectively means"taunt" "etiquette" and "flirting",which manifest the selfishness indifference and conservation of female in Eileen Chang's works and one of the themes in her works is the relationship between men and women, which conform to the original works.(2)There are two problems in the translation of Chinese character "Xiao" in Eileen Chang's translated works. The statistical and contextual analyses on the translations of Chinese character "Xiao" illustrate that most of the translations of "Xiao Dao" were omitted. In the specific context, the translations of phrases about "Xiao" were not accurate. There are two problems of omission and inaccuracy in the translation of Chinese character“Xiao”.(3)There are disparities between the female images in the original works and that in readers' reviews. The analyses on readers' reviews from the perspectives of value evaluation and reading experience indicate that women's tragedy comes from the society in the readers' eyes, while in the original text the author revealed women's weakness, and women's tragedy actually comes from their own weakness, which are disparities between the female images in the original works and that in readers1 reviews.(4)The problems in the translation of Chinese character "Xiao" cause the loss of the characters' images.Generally, the phrase "Xiao Dao,in the original work is a cover for women's real emotions, which shows women's oppression of themselves and their flattery to the society, and shows women's weakness of cowardice. This is the high frequency phrase about "Xiao",which was mostly omitted. To some extent, the translation will lead to the loss of female images in translated works.Specifically,in the specific context, some translations of Chinese character "Xiao" are not appropriate for the context, which will lead to the misinterpretation on the characters in the translated works.(5)The cause of translation problems is inadequate understanding of the context. From the perspective of context and literary translation, the reasons for such translation problems are the translator's insufficient understanding of the situation context and cultural context and the influence of the individual context. From the perspective of imagology.the reason for these problems in translation is the influence of stereotypes of female images in his native culture on the translator.
