This thesis consists of three chapters. It tries to discuss medio-translate to O' Neill relationship with the modernization of Chinese theater from the view of medio-translatology.Firstly, the prelude of medio-translate to O' Neill in china. (The 20th century,20 years) Long-standing cultural traditions of Western theater and the idea of Strindberg, Freud, Jung, Nietzsche and other modernist masters is the fertile soil to cultivate O' Neill's writing. At the same time, O' Neill is also familiar with the wisdom of Eastern philosophy and influenced by Chinese traditional culture. East-West cultural collision, the intersection of traditional and modern sense co-bred the world-class theater master. In the 20th century,20's, the pioneers of the New Culture Movement was generally noticed the "Small theater" campaign that pushed O' Neill to the American stage. In the influence of "Small theater" campaign, we successful launched "Amture play" campaign in China. For O'Neill was still a young man in the theatrical world, the medio-translate to O'Neill was mere description rather than the level of translation during this period.Secondly, the climax of medio-translate to O'Neill in China. (The 20th century,30 years) America's small theater campaign, the similar historical backgrounds of China and America, life experience and early writing with realistic themes and so caused the resonance of Chinese translators and readers. It laid the foundation for medio-translate to O'Neill in china. The 20th century,30's, the medio-translate to O' Neill inspirited the theory of construction, artistic expression, the basic pattern and structure, stage construction and other aspects of Chinese theater and played a very good role in accelerating the process of modernization of Chinese theater. Thirdly, the stagnation of medio-translate to O'Neill in China. (The 20th century, 40 years) Sino-Japanese War broke out in 1937, O'Neill's plays in reality, the fighting was not strong and didn't fit the literary environment in Anti-Japanese War; In order to unite the public,theatrical world promoted national theater and denied foreign drama. In 1947, the Truman administration adjusted its policy to China that led to a change in Sino-US political relations. These reasons above resulted in the stopping of medio-translate to O'Neill in China, O'Neill and his plays have become a victim of the times and politics. But some sporadic translation and review articles expressed helpless also indicated hope.
