To train students to be applied professionals who are proficient in Business English and can adapt to the needs of society has become a major focus of English teaching in universities especially of Business English teaching in Independent Colleges. According to the principles of "application-based, enough to use" put forward by "basic requirements of curriculums in Independent Colleges", the student must master the basic knowledge and skills in English, at the same time, Business English teaching should develop or exercise the ability of students to have an adaptive capacity to be competent for his position soon after graduation.Competency-based course requires that content and methods in education should be chosen depending on the capability structure of modern people and the laws of capacity development. It stresses transformation from knowledge into capabilities, highlights experiment courses, activity courses, open courses and other kinds of curriculum and the cultivation of student ability. This study chose Chongqing Nanfang Translators College of SISU as object of study and took the interviewing method to make a survey of curriculum design for business English. Then according to analysis of the survey results, the study tries to find out its present problems, and tries to seek out the reasons behind these problems, and finally presents a reasonable and practical curriculum design for Business English in independent Colleges based on competency. This thesis is composed of four parts:Introduction:This part expounds the genesis of the study, defines the main conceptions, studies and analyses the existing research at home and abroad, based on which it states the theoretical and practical value of this study. It also analyses the object, train of thought and methods of this research.Part one:The basic ideas of Competence-based curriculum design. This part first interprets the theory of competence-based curriculum design. Based on this, it expounds the basic features and basic stands of competence-based curriculum design.Part two:This part mainly focuses on survey of present situation of Business English Curriculum Design of Chongqing Nanfang Translators College of SISU. Beginning from the needs of Business English major itself, this study continues to investigate the fields graduates engaged in and job distribution; students, teachers and employers'comments on present situation of Business English course design and present situation of curriculums of Business English of Independent Colleges, and finally further analyses the problems existing in curriculums of Business English of Independent Colleges.Part three:Aiming at the problems found in analysis, this study probes into the principles, targets, systems and contents, implementation and evaluation system of curriculum design for Business English in Independent Colleges and Schools. At the same time, it also offers some focused countermeasures and suggestions.Conclusion:This part further explains the shortcomings of this study and future direction for further efforts.
