| With the flourishing development of shipping industry, Maritime Code of P.R.C. (hereinafter referred to as MCP) plays an important role in regulating the maritime activities. It is necessary to research on the English version of MCP because it symbolizes that the shipping industry of China meets an international standard. First, the Maritime Treaty English (hereinafter referred to as MTE) corpus was constructed. The paper, taking the classification of conjunctions by Halliday and Hasan and corpus linguistic theory as the theoretical framework, compares the conjunctions in both texts by means of quantitative and qualitative research methods. In addition, the paper analyzes conjunctions in the following aspects:the overall frequencies, the frequently used conjunctions, conjunctions overused and underused, and the patterns and positions, and tries to achieve the underlying causes of the differences.High-frequency conjunctions were calculated by Antconc, SPSS according to statistical principles. Furthermore, Chi-square test was used to validate the significant difference between the two texts. The analysis reflects that the frequency of the additive conjunctions ranks the first place and is followed by the causal conjunctions, and it gives evidence of the characteristic of precise wording and strong logicality in legal language; in the Chi-square test, the calculated values of adversative and causal conjunctions are larger than the critical value which indicates there is a significant difference between the two texts. Moreover, the calculated values of some words in the four types of conjunctions are larger than the critical value, and it shows that a part of the conjunctions reveal the significant difference in both texts; the comparison shows the MTE corpus uses more formal words and some of the formal words reveal significant differences. Finally, some suggestions are made on how to apply the findings in the teaching of maritime documents translation and the law translation.
