The Practice Report On Translation Of English And Chinese Maritime Teaching Materials

With an increasingly frequent communication between China, a great shipping power, and the rest of the world, maritime documents are gaining more and more attention as an important tool and media to promote the maritime communication, so is the need for maritime document translation. Maritime documents involve many different aspects such as engineering, navigation, shipping, maritime law, international trade and finance, etc, which subsequently requires a proficient knowledge of language features of maritime documents, professional nautical knowledge for the translator, as well as adept translating skills and ability to practice.This thesis discusses the author’s practice on the translation of maritime documents Chinese Ancient Nautical History and Response to accidents at sea involving spills of hazardous substances and loss of packaged dangerous goods which has more than10thousand words altogether. In the thesis, the author elaborates on the characteristics of maritime documents----maritime English is rich in technical terms with less repetition, more long, compound and passive voice sentences, while Chinese, especially ancient Chinese, is abundant in monosyllabic words, synonyms, polysemic words with shorter sentences. In the whole practice process, both challenges and solutions have been met and made. At last, the thesis also provides a conclusion as well as an enlightenment on the future translation of maritime documents.
