Over the past three or four decades, the research on the Warring States characters has enjoyed an unprecedented flourishing. Many final conclusions of the interpretations of these characters have also been made. Results of the research on the characters used in the states like Qin, Chu, Qi and Three Jin or San-jin have been presented in the way of collectanea, but so far there is not a monograph on the collection of the characters of Yan State, even though some researchers have already done a good job in categorizing the Yan characters. Hence, it is necessary to summarize the current achievements on Yan characters to promote the development on the research in this field. This dissertation titled Volumes of Yan Characters falls into three parts:the first part is an introduction, the second part is the main thesis, "Characters List", and the third part presents sources of materials. The text materials collected in this dissertation include bronze wares, weapons, seals, pottery inscriptions, and ancient coins. The introduction reviews and summarizes the current research on Yan characters. In this part, in accord with the study scope of this paper, it pays great attention on outlining the progress of the study on Yan characters. For example, inscriptions on bronze wares like (?) (ai),(?) (wei),(?) (zuo),(?)(jian),(?)(huo), the inscriptions on the weapons like(?) (zuo),(?) (huo), family name like (?) (lv wu) in seals, the character(?)" (lai) in pottery inscriptions, and etc.Characters List is made up of Main List, Combined Characters and Appendix. In the Main List, characters are listed according to the Da Xu Ben order if they are appeared in the "Shuowen Jiezi", followed by the corresponding style of Xiao Zhuan. If there are variant characters, they will be listed another line below and given the official script. The character will be placed after the corresponding radical (bu shou) when it doesn't appear in "Shuo Wen Jie Zi".The scanned characters collected in this volume are the rubbings from the original. They are zoomed accordingly for the sake of the unity of style. Copies are attached to some indistinct rubbings. The character patterns are categorized according to the sources of materials. Each is attached by the origin of the character and its explanations. Combined Characters specially include examples of combined words. Appendix contains the characters unknown or difficult to conclude. Sources of materials include all sources of information as well as all of their explanations. This part is arranged according to the sequence of bronzes, weapons, seals, coins and pottery scripts.
