With the development of economy and society, the exchanges between nations become more and more frequent, so intercultural communication has become one part of people's daily life. Necessarily, intercultural communication studies also became hot topics. At the early stage of study, people always consider language as the direct study objects, but with further study, people found that failure intercultural communication still exists after mastered proficient language, such as "fluent fools". Therefore, in this thesis, through some failure examples in intercultural communication, we will study the operation mechanism of cognitive environment in intercultural utterance interpretation, so that people will fully realize the importance of cognitive environment in intercultural communication and then some failure communications can be avoided. The first part of this thesis is an introduction, which briefly introduces the background and significance of my study, and then analyzes the statement of the problem, and the theoretical framework for the study. Chapter Two first reviews the previous study about the context of utterance, and then analyzes the weakness of the previous study on this topic and the feasibility of cognitive environment on utterance interpretation in intercultural communication, and finally the contribution this study will make to the field of study. Chapter Three analyzes the involvement of cognitive environment in interpreting the explicature and implicature of utterance. Chapter Four studies the construction of cognitive environment in intercultural utterance interpretation from two levels:explicatures and implicatures, and then analyzes the obstacles existing in the process of intercultural utterance interpretation and finds out the solutions. Chapter Five is the conclusive part. It will summarize the major findings and significance of the study, and limitations as well as suggestions are presented for future investigation.Through analyzing the operation of cognitive environment in intercultural utterance interpretation, we found that most failure intercultural communications are not caused by language, but by the distinctions of cognitive environment. Therefore, in intercultural communication, we should attach great importance to intercultural communication, and continue to enlarge mutual cognitive environment, so that we can make smooth communication.
