On Creativity In Literary Translation

As is known, translation studies have being attached much importance the principle of "fidelity". Although some translators put forward translation ideas on creativity and highlight the significance of creativity in literary translation, this has yet to garner much attention or research. With the "cultural turn" of translation studies, championed by Bassnett and Lefevere, translation becomes more dynamic and less constrained by linguistic perspective, which requires much more creativity on the part of the translator. So far, research on the Chinese version of Saving Fish From Drowning has been mainly focused on the perspective of literary criticism, this thesis attempts to study the text from the perspective of creativity in literary translation, proving the rationality, necessity and significance of creativity. Several influencing factors of creativity in literary translation will be clearly expounded in this thesis. Furthermore, the relationship among translation, writing and rewriting will also be concretely explored. This thesis mainly intends to illuminate creativity in literary translation from different translation techniques, such as flexible translation, artful translation, edited translation, addition and omission in translation, simplified translation and appropriate translation. Consequently, a final conclusion is naturally drawn: creativity in literary translation is reasonable, necessary and important. From the perspective of creativity in literary translation, this research endeavors to expand the dimension of translation studies and open a new way for translation studies. This research strives to be good for the translator's future practice, improving cultural exchange between China and western countries.
