Chinese schools have been in existence in the city of San Jose, California of the United States of America since the 1970's. These schools have worked very hard and made significant contributions to the promotion of the Chinese culture and language in the past forty years. Countless number of experts was trained. The curricula and activities offered by these schools are well received by the community. It is evident that the seeds of Chinese culture are successfully spread. The recent popularity of Chinese study has a positive impact on the development of Chinese schools. As the number of Chinese schools is on a steady rise, school structure and student composition are changing dramatically. Each school is gradually gaining their own distinct characteristics and styles.This thesis will study the community functions of several Chinese schools in the city of San Jose. The descriptions of and comparisons between the schools will be thorough and in-depth. Concentration of the investigation will be put in the following areas:school operations, student sources, number of graduates, curricula, teacher qualifications, the choosing of teaching materials, teaching models, tests, and extra-curricular activities. It has been found from this research that Chinese schools in this city have the following functions: Chinese language education, after-school care, Chinese test preparation, cultural enrichment, and also social and religious functions. At the same time, analysis and queries of the characteristics and inadequacies of community functions of Chinese schools will be brought up. This is an attempt to provide a reference point for concerned Chinese educators so that this effort will help improve the future of Chinese education.
