Qu Xi-xian (1919-2008), a famous woman conductor, used to be the vice-chairperson and consultant of Chinese Musician Association. As a all-around composer, Qu Xi-xian composed a lot of brilliant compositions of different subjects and types, among which the most popular and influential and the biggest part of all her works are compositions for chorus, such as Listening to Mama's Old Story, The Flying Petal, The Cuckoo sang, Calling My Infant Name. Some of her compositions for chorus adapted from folk songs, such as Eclogue Pastoral, In A Remote Place, Chanty on Ussuri, have won great reputations both home and abroad and become the masterpieces composed by Chinese. In different stages, she had composed different types of compositions for chorus. Among them, some works show the spirit of the era, some express love and childlike innocence, some are from international point of view and some are full of ethnic verve.Qu Xi-xian's compositions for chorus with their salient artistic feature and consummate artistic skill hold a very important position among all the compositions for chorus in China. Through the comprehensive analysis on the artistic features of her compositions for chorus and the artistic treatment when conducting the chorus of some of her representative pieces, we can not only understand the artistic charm of Qu Xi-xian's compositions for chorus, but we can also understand and master her works more accurately. This research can give us guidance on rehearsing her musical pieces and reference on choral teaching and theoretical research on compositions for chorus.This dissertion is composed of three parts:preface, text and conclusion. The preface mainly analyzes the theoretical and practical meaning of this research, the method of research and new movement of the research in this field.
