The Criticism And Reflection Of The Cultural Universalism In The Context Of Globalization

This paper mainly studies conflict of different cultures in the context of globalization. This phenomenon of cultural clash has become a very intense issue and drawn widespread concern. Since the 20th century, especially in the contemporary China,is always facing cultural ideological conflicts between the ancient and modern,the Orient and the Occident,and facing the complementary problems:how to properly deal with the problem of the history succession of traditional culture and modern culture and how to deal with the problem of blending the complementary of Chinese culture and Western culture. On this basis, this article discusses shortcomings of the view of the cultural universalism and its related issues involved.The thesis is mainly consisted of following five chepters.In the introduction part,the author points out the significance of the study on the subject, summarizes general situation of philosophy of culture at home and abroad. And in the end,the author analyzes the theorical contentions on the cultural universalism and cultural relativism.The second chapter introduces the theoretical background and main points of the cultural universalism through the Occident ideology history firstly,then expounds cultural universalism's defects and shortcomings to make people realize the potential danger of the theory to the nation-states, especially to the developing countries.The third chapter specifically analyzes some issues involved in the cultural universalism such as the traditional culture and modern culture, cultural conservatism and cultural activism, cultural worldwide and cultural national character.The basis not only expounds their respective and oretical perspectives and pionts out their respective advantages and disadvantages, but also discusses the attitudes and measures which should be taken when we face the occident foreign culture.In the fourth chapter,the author points out the harm of this theory of cultural universalismto nation-state's cultural heritage. It attempts to destroy the uniqueness of national culture and to make culture toward to homogenization which can easily lead to cultural conflicts and provide theoretical support for cultural imperialism.In the fifth chapter,based on the summarization of the content in the preceding chapters, we can conclude that we should break the mode of binary opposition between the cultural universalism and cultural relativism and use open thinking, adhere to cultural diversity and specificity.Meanwhile, in the dialogue of the cultural exchanges,we should adhere to dialogism and continuously absorb progressive and fresh culture.Only in this way can we achieve comprehensive blend, continue injecting our own culture a new vitality and strength to let ourselves-culture move towards progress and prosperity.
