The Cultural Characteristic Construction Of Historical And Cultural Cities In The Process Of Modernization

Historical and Cultural city, carrying rich culture, is the witness and narrator in urban renewal. With the acceleration of modernization and major cities’marching toward modern metropolis, Historical and Cultural city in urban transformation are facing with serious problems ashow to deal with the balance between protection and exploitation, inheritance and development, repair and reconstruction. In this paper, through on-the-spot investigation, Xi’an——the first batch of Historical and Cultural city——as a typical case, explores the path of how the Historical and Cultural city keeps its local characteristics, at the same time be invincible in modernization. The first chapter of this thesis defines the conception of "modernization", "Historical and Cultural city" and "cultural characteristics", analyses the relationship among the three concepts, introduces the academic background, the contents and methodology of this thesis. The second chapter and the third chapter conduct studies on how the Historical and Cultural city Xi’an constructs its culture characteristics. By taking Qujiang district as a successful case, this thesis analyses the case in detail and makes efforts to discover the strategy of Xi’an’s urban renewal. The fourth chapter explores the measures of protecting the Historical and Culture city. The fifth chapter is the conclusion part, making an induction of the general pattern for Historical and Cultural cities to keep its traditional cultural characteristics in the modernization process of urban renewal.Based on document studies and field investigation, this thesis believes that the best way of keeping traditional or historical culture alive in modern society is to make it into our present life, rather than to keep it behind the museum window, or to replace the traditional culture with modern culture. Only those culture that with a fresh vitality that could be able to last perpetually.
