Li Yuanqing is a 20th century Chinese musicologist and music activist of outstanding achievements. He was one of the creators, organizers and leaders of the Music Research Institute of the Chinese National Academy of Arts. Moreover, during his music career and life journey, he contributed a lot to the development of Chinese traditional music research.This study offers a detailed retrospect of his life by adopting as organizing criterion the particular sequence of Chinese historical phases Li Yuanqing went through. At the same time, through a systematic review of his music research and musical social activities-in particular his role in the establishment of the Music Research Institute of the Chinese National Academy of Arts and in promoting the improvement of traditional musical instruments-this study endeavors to offer an objective understating and evaluation of his historical contribution.The core of this paper is divided into three parts.The first gives a biographic account of Li Yuanqing:it reviews the course of his life and music career.The second discusses Li Yuanqing's participation in the planning and establishment of the Music Research Institute of the Chinese National Academy of Arts, as well as his role within that institution.The third part, by classifying and analyzing his writings, his translations and his music composition, offers an objective evaluation of his academic achievements and contribution to music.
