As a director who used to be a photographer, Gu Changwei only has produced two films named as "Peacock" and "And the Spring Comes" currently. "Peacock" as a maiden work of Gu Changwei picked "silver bear" at Berlin Film Festival in 2005 and Jiang Wenli, the main actress in "And the Spring Comes" also the wife of Gu Changwei, won the best actress in the 2008's Rome File Festival. There is no systematic study about Gu Changwei currently in China. With the study of Gu Changwei's growth background, introduction of his films, idealistic intrinsic in his films, the style and artistic value of the images in his films, detailed researches have been done in this paper. First of all, the affections of Gu Changwei's growth background and age environment on his work are analyzed. And then, the idealistic intrinsic and image style are extracted from "Peacock" and "And the Spring Comes". A comparison between Gu Changwei and Jia Zhangke are made and the similarities and differences between them are indicated. Finally, the film styles of Gu Changwei are summarized and the artistic value are indicated, especially the positive exploration between the film's artistic value and business value.In Gu Changwei's films, the grassroots are paid more attention and he tries to give solicitude and dignity to the vulnerable groups in this society. His films regard the humanistic care, choose the female theme and enrich the diversity of film style. His films fill the blank of town films by paying adequate heed to the grassroots. His films received may awards at foreign film festivals and serve as the window through which the world could see the real China. Many foreign critics claim that Cu's films have shown the universal life experience of human being.After a general study of Gu's films, this thesis tries to summarize the film style of his films, analyze how his film creation ideas formed, summarize his films'artistic values and the revelatory effect to the Chinese film development. This thesis analyzes how to make a good balance between art and business in Gu's films and the breakthrough and creation in this process. With the development of contemporary Chinese films, this thesis tries to explore the artistic, social and documental values of Gu's films, study the real environment in his films and look ahead to the prospects of his coming films. It is the intension of this thesis that more and more people pay attention to Gu's films and the grassroots, show their sympathy to the vulnerable groups, and reflect their own living situations. It is hoped that the balance search between art and business and the creation ideas change with the market change will provide some suggestions for development of domestic film industry.
