| Sports has become an important sign indicating the degree of social civilization, and it has turned into an indispensable part of human ordinary life.The internationalized sports promotes English become the paramount tool for people of different nationalities, races or cultural background to appreciate and communicate what interests them in sports. The successful and nearly perfect completion of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games has pushed up people's attention on sports.There are countless sports events, small or big, at home and abroad every year, like Olympic Games (summer and winter), World Cup, NBA and various tournaments. And not every one can watch those events on the spot, sports news comes into existence as the situation requires so as to meet the needs of the people, fans of certain sports, to have a timely information and knowledge about what is going on around the world at the moment.Sports news, as one of the most important news reporting variants, has some general characteristics of the common news reporting. Besides, as an independent form of news reporting, it also has its own distinctive features in accordance with sports, this special style. And it is known that there are different layouts in a newspaper, such as feature, comment, column, which have their own writing style and specific traits.The thesis would collect the original literature from OLYMPIAN, which is a serial reporting about 2008 Beijing Olympics in China Daily, and do analysis and make a summarization. The study is aimed to, on one hand, make people (especially foreigners) have a better understanding of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and China further; on the other hand, to make people (especially those who love sports) have a clear and comprehensive knowledge about the characteristics of sports news so as to easily read and further understand the related sports news reporting.The thesis includes five chapters. Chapter one is the introduction to the present thesis. Chapter two presents the theoretical framework on the previous researches on journalistic English and sports news at home and abroad. Chapter three makes a simple analysis to the structure and layouts of serial reporting on 2008 Beijing Olympic Games--OLYMPIAN and features of China Daily. Chapter four, the main body of the thesis, will analyze and summarize the stylistic features of OLYMPIAN in China Daily from three levels: lexical level, syntactic level and textual level. Chapter five is the conclusion part.Language is a dynamic thing, which would change in line with the pace of social progress as well as the development of sports. Therefore, more elaborate descriptions and analysis of the stylistics features of English sports news reporting of Chinese newspaper are necessitated in the future study.
