What's Myth? This is an ancient and vibrant topic. Myth, as Carl Marx said, is the imagination of"human childhood", and is also comfort for the civilized life. In fact, Myth has never been a single and stationary concept, but we always transform the way about talking the myth.Myth is a religion. It conveys the poetic truth than real history. Myth has been moisture people's soul gradually withered in rational world. In this sense, the myth has been parasitic in human lives and never been loiter away. For Myth, the most point is not our incompetent to find it, but we often ignore the existence of myth. The Gothic Novel changed the face of the gods came to us, so we preoccupied realistic creation like contemporary Defoe's. On the contrary, we denounced the Gothic story's lies. Therefore, the Gothic novel is not only reader's entertainment, more importantly, it also convey the "true myth" to the world. Based on this, I believe that the British Gothic fiction is the myth of the Age of Enlightenment. To illustrate this problem, this thesis will traceability and discuss it from the three parts (Myth theme, functions and form). In the first chapter, the author focused on discussing of the myth theory as to explain the Myth meaning in today's academic circles. By that, the thesis adapted one which set opt standard method rather than the strict definition of myth as defined semantics. Given it, we get conclusion that the concept of myth is modifying, and will change along with the times. The Gothic novel dedicated to creating a new myth of the Age of Enlightenment, which also created the original magic almost forgotten by civilized in the context of myth. In Follow chapters, we will make further talks closely around the Myth theme, function and form (language). The second chapter, the author adapt the theme of comparative literature approach to explain Motif "urban" and "devil" of the Gothic Novel. Furthermore, the paper will traceability it's origin of the Christian Bible's cultural origins, the final aim is establishing a bridge between Gothic Novel with myth.In chapter three, thesis explained social significance revealed the unreal Gothic story from myth's social function. There are two points in details. On the one hand, the reader can avoid reality by means of imagination depicted in the myth of the Gothic story so as to take the release of human survival instinct anxiety from a psychological archetype; on the other hand, the Gothic novel contains popular culture which is worth cracking passwords, including the Gothic novel flourished in the publishing industry and its contribution to popular culture, and significance of popular culture about monks and monasteries etc.The final chapter, the author reveals the "trap" nature of language from the linguistic level, which reminds the reader that we should be inquisitive and dig the surface dive hidden text to speech free of speech when we appreciate the Gothic myth. From previous comments, we can see that the Gothic novel has been through the literary criticism of the "prism" reflects its rich and colorful side.Through these three aspects of discussion, we see that there is a close resemblance between Gothic fiction and classical mythology. Hence, we believe that Gothic fiction is the myth of the Age of Enlightenment.
