A Dissertation On The Theme "Destruction" Of Allan Poe’s Short Gothic Novels

American writer Edgar Allan Poe who lived in the19th century had a short andunfortunately life,but he won a high admiration in the literary world.He was a poet、a novelistand a literary critic,also,he was the very pioneer of multiple literature ideological trend andthe very founder of multiple literary genres.In recent years,as a master representativepersonage of the American Gothic Novel,Poe’s gothic works receive more and more attentionin China with the worldwide fashionable Gothic culture.This thesis will select8classic gothic novels of Allan Poe as research object to discoursethe theme destruction,which on the foundation of text analysis.I will use Psychology andthe effect of aesthetic which is created by Poe as the main theoretical bases o f the thesis.Atthe same time, biographical criticism is a important part.The traditional British Gothic Novelswhich had belonged to Continental Europe became popular in transoceanic America, and theAmerican writers who were affected by the gothic novels started to have a try to writethem.They made a good change of Gothic Novel,then gothic novels became to be accepted bythe mainstream literary world. Up to this day,the Gothic Novel has steped into the palace ofliterature.The Psychological Gothic Novel which is created by Allan Poe starts to think of thealienation of humanity and pay attention to the inward world of humanbeing.He has madegothic novels not just a way to obtain novelty、incitant experience and a way to satisfypeople’s vulgar taste. Theme research is a big part of the past research of Poe,but there almostno one had discussed on the theme destruction.This thesis is devided into four parts.Fisrt,I will state the inheritance and development oftranditional British Gothic Novels in Poe’s works.Secondly,I will discuss the threerepresentations of destruction in Poe’s novels.Thirdly,I will find the reasons why he wortedestruction in his works.Finally,I will point out the very meaning and inflection of the themedestruction.The final conclusion is that Poe had seen the evil of humanbeing200years agoand pay a try to eliminate anxiety which is generate from it with extreme means. Whethersuccessful or not,he had showed us his yearning that everyone would have perfect personalityand caused our thinking and resonance.
