The Acceptance And Influences Of Venuti's Foreignizing Translation Views In China

Lawrence Venuti, a famous Italian-American scholar, is a proponent of foreignizing translation views. Since the introduction and translation of his representative book The Translator's Invisibility: A History of Translation by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press in 1995, a wider and deeper discussion about"domestication"and"foreignization"has been aroused throughout China than before.In the confrontation of"domestication"vs."foreignization", different scholars hold different attitudes, some doubt it by insisting that"foreignizing translation"always stay at a marginalized position; while others fully approve it holding that"foreignizing translation"plays a great role in resisting ethnocentrism, especially in resisting Anglo-American culture. Then which side gets the upper hand in the end?The thesis begins with an overview of the background of Venuti's foreignizing translation views and several manifestations of it, which also forms the theoretical basis of the present thesis.Presented afterwards is the acceptance situation of Venuti's foreignizing translation views in China. The author, by arranging, classifying and analyzing all theses on Venuti's foreignizing translation views in China, draws a conclusion that more scholars tend to prefer foreignizing translation in China. What is discussed then is the reasons for this preference behind. In the process of accepting Venuti's foreignizing translation views, both positive influences and misreadings have brought about. When clarifying the misreadings, many problems remain. And these problems are to be solved by the future research.
