A Study Of Sun Fali's Chinese Version Of Tess Of The D'Urbervilles From The Perspective Of L.Venuti's Foreignizing Translation Theory

In the context of the cultural turn in translation studies,Lawrence Venuti integrated the ideas of many translation theorists and re-examined the Anglo-American translation tradition with a profound historical awareness.It is found that in most periods translation was closer to the target language.The domesticating translation strategy has long been guiding translation practice,and foreign cultures have not received much attention,which contributes to the lasting invisibility of translators.Under such circumstances,Venuti,a scholar of the translation studies school,put forward the foreignizing translation theory,which reflects his efforts to deconstruct traditional domesticating centrism.He calls on the translator to suppress ethno-centrism,oppose Anglo-American cultural hegemony,promote the translator's visibility and highlight the differences between the source text and the target text in language structure and culture.Thereby,the translator can move from the invisible background to the visible front.With Venuti's foreignizing translation theory as the basis,this thesis analyzes the heterogeneous cultural elements in Sun Fali's Chinese version of Tess of the D'Urbervilles in terms of cultural translation mode.Chinese and English are vastly different at the linguistic level,so are the cultural connotations behind them.As Tess was written in the Victorian period,its relatively remote sense of age gains a layer of cultural gauze for Chinese readers.This thesis probes into the three cultural levels of Sun's translation: macro-level,meso-level and micro-level.Translation is always undertaken in a cultural environment;thus,the macro-level perspective provides the background framework for the study offoreignization.Language itself is culture,not just the carrier of culture.So,the meso-level study draws people's vision to language itself and reveals the differences between English and Chinese in terms of language organization.In the micro-level study,emphasis is put on the analyses of words and expressions of unique cultural connotations and the revelation of cultural differences in specific words and expressions.Sun is inclined to use foreignizing translation strategy.On the cultural macro-level,his personal growth experience and historical background contribute to the formation of his translation style and the choice of translation strategies.On the cultural meso-level,the translator always keeps the sentence pattern,follows the linguistic structure,and does not change the voice of the source text.The “Europeanized”sentence structure in his translation reflects the western way of thinking,which emphasizes analysis and objectivity.On the cultural micro-level,the translator also adopts such flexible translation techniques as literal translation and transliteration,tries not to replace foreign words which are difficult to translate with words of his own culture,and meanwhile uses annotation to make up for the confusion that foreignization may cause.In the analyses of these three levels,it can be seen that Sun's translation shows a relatively simple and elegant language style and embodies a typical foreignizing translation thought.His translation highlights the cultural differences between the source text and the target text and retains the cultural heterogeneity.In a word,on the basis of Venuti's theory and through the analyses of examples,this thesis discusses the phenomenon of foreignization in Sun's translation of Tess and his corresponding strategies.When doingliterary translation,translators should give full play to their subjective initiative,and flexibly use foreignizing translation strategies to promote equal communication between cultures.
