With human's conquering power over nature continuously enhanced, environmental pollution and ecological destruction are also becoming increasingly severe. It's difficult so far to estimate how serious the consequences would be for human beings brought by the gradually deviated relationship between man and nature and by the ecological damage to the environment. Though the documentaries of China within the last decade have made great progresses, the eco-documentary category is still a subject matter that few film producers are involved in. However eco-documentary is a sort of documentary of virtually documentary value, historical value and social value, positively significant both now and in the future, both for the human being and for the ecological environment harmony,.Eco-documentary is the product of social context and historical background, and as a language of images it plays a highly appraised advocacy and education role in improving the ecological environmental awareness of the public. At present, China's eco-documentary production is at the fledgling stage, while some eminent works with "Forest China" as the representative have made certain achievements, and in some sense have opened the prelude of China's eco-documentary and filled the blanks in the history of domestic eco-documentary. However, China's eco-documentary still faces many problems and plights, its future path of development remaining an issue waiting for us to explore and research. In this paper, four major parts are set to address this subject. The first part is an overview of the study, introducing the concept of eco-documentary, its state of the art and its researching value, and demonstrating the purpose, significance and problems of this study. The second part analyzes the creating characteristics of eco-documentary, and, taking the "Forest China" as an example, dissects the aesthetic features of eco-documentary. Aspects of narrative, aesthetic, and performance techniques, etc. are separately surveyed, and all these are finally summarized and generalized. The third part conducts comparative analysis between the"Animal Planet"program of the US's Discovery Channel and the nature documentaries of China, compares their differences in the cultural background, style, idea and production techniques, and attempts to to find the deficiency and shortages of China's ecological documentaries. The fourth part, by analyzing the plight and problems of eco-documentaries, is intended to propose some suggestions for China's eco-documentary and look into its future.
